Sherry Hoffman Receives Island Spirit Award

Our very own Sherry Hoffman, who has been with the library since 2003 and has been an employee of the City of Gulf Shores for the past 12 years, is the recipient of the Island Spirit Award for July 2009.

"The Island Spirit Award is given monthly to an individual who works on the island and displays an attitude of concern, warmth, and hospitality to those they serve."

This award is presented by the Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, and selection is based upon nominations submitted by coworkers or acquaintances. Sherry's nomination stated that she is "consistently pleasant and smiling...she has a welcoming attitude and most of all provides excellent customer service!"

Congratulations, Sherry!

Laura Says Goodbye

Just wanted to let you know that as of April 11th, 2009, I no longer work for the City of Gulf Shores Library. It was a wonderful 7 years, and I'm sure I'll be bugging all my old colleagues frequently when I visit them, and eventually hope to work with them again in some capacity...

The Library Director, Wendy Congiardo, will be handling all of the vendor and subscription questions and her email is: wcongiardo@gulfshoresal.gov

Blogspot questions or requests to post information need to go to Amy or Melody at: thomasbnortonlibrary@gmail.com

If there is something you need to get in touch with me personally over, like the Friends Newsletter, please email me at: libraryreferencedesk@gmail.com

I have been blessed to work with wonderful colleagues, patrons and friends, and I hope to see y'all around as I spend time with my wonderful little boy Hayward, who is the reason for my resignation, and what a great reason that is!

Have a wonderful day!

Book Club News

After five years of hostessing the book club, Sherry Hoffman has handed off the baton to the team of Amy Maliska and Melody Solstad...

They are excited at the prospect of stimulating book discussions, and have already found a way to communicate Book Club choices to the members. Beginning next week, those who are interested in either attending the Book Club meetings, or just reading the books that the Book Club selects, will have the opportunity to sign up for an email alert as each book is added.

Instructions for the newsletter signup will be posted to the blogspot next week so that this mode of communications can be taken advantage of...

Melody and Amy would like to thank all who attended their first Book Club meeting last night. They both enjoyed the discussion about The Shack, and getting to know the Book Club members. The members of the book club selected their first book with the new moderators, which is Ken Follett's World Without End,which will be discussed at the June 1st meeting. A reminder that the book club choice for May is The Necklace, by Cheryl Jarvis.

"Sharecropper's Son" Bert Hayes to be Guest Speaker April 11th at the meeting of the Baldwin County Genealogical Society at Foley Public Library

Bert Hayes, author of a unique memoir “Sharecropper’s Son”, will be guest speaker Saturday, April 11th to visitors and members of the Baldwin County Genealogical Society beginning at 10 a.m. in the Meeting Room of the Foley Public Library.

Hayes, the eleventh of twelve children of sharecroppers, suggests he lived a quiet, rural childhood that engendered curiosity and imagination. While earning his PH.D., he tells that throughout his education, his quest for experience, knowledge and wisdom led him to travel to many places in the world including the countries of Israel and Greece where Hays studied classical and extinct languages. He also studied in Jerusalem and worked in field archaeology at Ashdod and Gezer.

“How one (can) journey from the middle of a cotton field in the Georgia Piedmont to the Middle East is a mystery in itself” says Hayes but remembers the journey as divine guidance by some ordinary human angels. Copies of his book will be available at the meeting.

The Baldwin County Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization meeting the second Saturday of each month in the Meeting Room of the Foley Public Library, 319 East Laurel Ave., Foley, AL.  The meetings are open to interested public.
